There are several factors to consider in making the repair or replace decision:

Age of the toilet – if the toilet is over 25 years old, you should consider replacing it.   Surprisingly, the technology advancements around toilets have been substantial since the passing of the Energy Policy Act of 1992.  Newer toilets have been designed with water-saving features that increase flushing power while conserving water and saving you money.

However, if you have a very small space for your toilet, it may have been designed with a 10” rough-in.  It’s best to measure this distance before you purchase your new unit.  To determine the rough-in distance, measure from the wall to the toilet bolt on the base of the toilet.
  • Base size and design – if the flooring was installed after the toilet, it’s possible that the flooring does not extend underneath the current toilet. Look at your current flooring situation to see if you need to take the toilet footprint into consideration for your replacement.
  • Height of the toilet – if there is a ledge, window, or another obstruction above the toilet, you’ll need to make sure the height of your new unit will work with the current set up.
  • Height of the seat – toilets come in standard and tall heights. If mobility is a consideration, you will want to find a toilet that meets the ADA compliance for seat height.  This is generally around 16-17” and can easily be found on toilets in home improvement stores.
  • Toilet shape—toilets come in two common seat shapes: round or elongated. Personal comfort generally determines which shape you choose.  However, if the toilet space is small, you’ll want to be sure an elongated seat will fit without impeding door space.  The last thing you want to do is install a new toilet and find the bathroom door can’t close anymore.
