Why do slab leaks occur in the Texas Hill Country?

Homes in the Texas Hill Country experience frequent slab leaks due to the mineral content of the water, to the soil composition that results in shifts in the foundation, and to chemicals in the foundations when pipes aren’t properly wrapped.

How are slab leaks repaired?

There are two types of slab leaks:  water line slab leaks and drain line slab leaks.  Each type has a basic procedure for repair.

Water line slab leaks are usually repaired by replacing the water lines with PEX tubing.  This tubing can usually be run through the walls, ceiling, and cabinets of the home resulting in minimal cosmetic damage in the home.  Small cuts in the sheetrock are usually all that is needed to reattach the new tubing to the appliance and fixture shutoff valves.

Drain line slab leaks generally need to be exposed in the slab and replaced with new pipes that are set at the correct slant for the flow of wastewater away from the home.  Even in the process of re-piping the drain lines in the home, our Jilly plumbers strive for the least invasive methods to replace the pipes.

What are signs of a slab leak?

  • Decrease in water pressure in the home
  • Unexplained dampness on carpets
  • Warped wood flooring or subfloors
  • Cracks in tile or cement flooring
  • Areas on the floor that are cooler or warmer than the rest of the floor
  • Significant increase in water bill without additional water usage

How Does a Plumbing Re-pipe Work?

We know the idea of re-piping your home can feel over whelming, so we strive to make the process straight-forward.  Here’s what you can expect:

  1. We obtain the necessary city or county permits.
  2. We evaluate the plumbing in your home to locate all water lines that will need to be replaced.
  3. We discuss with you the plan for rerouting the water lines and present you with the available placement options.
  4. We lay the PEX and/or copper water lines and turn off your water to hook up the new lines.
  5. We test the new lines for water tightness.
